PROF. MIKE OZEKHOME SAN CON OFR REPUTATION ...IJAW YOUTH COUNCIL (IYC) WORLDWIDE MAKES CASE
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has observed with deep concern and dismay the orchestrated campaign of calumny and trial-by-media surrounding the ongoing legal proceedings involving the esteemed Chief Professor Mike Ozekhome, SAN, CON, OFR, a distinguished legal luminary, human rights advocate, and proud son of the Niger Delta.
The IYC, in a statement signed by Bedford Berefa Benjamin National Spokesperson, Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide ,it emphasizes that the filing of charges does not equate to conviction, and cautions against deliberate attempts to tarnish the reputation of this respected individual. The council notes that attempts to portray allegations as settled facts are not only misleading but also malicious, and an affront to the principles of justice and fairness.
The IYC is particularly disturbed by the selective leak of prosecution materials to the media, while deliberately downplaying or ignoring the defendant's explanations and legal defenses. It is reckless and unjust to present preliminary investigative opinions as final conclusions, and to subject Prof. Ozekhome to media trial and character assassination. The council stresses that Prof. Ozekhome's reputation and legacy should not be subjected to such treatment. As a seasoned lawyer, scholar, and human rights advocate, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court. The IYC will not stand idly by while one of Nigeria's most respected legal minds is subjected to reputational ambush and media lynching.
The IYC commends Prof. Ozekhome for his tireless efforts in promoting justice, democracy, and human rights in Nigeria and beyond. His contributions to the legal profession and the nation are immeasurable, and his commitment to the rule of law is unwavering.
The council calls on Nigerians and the international community to allow the court to do its job without pressure, propaganda, or prejudice. We must respect the principles of due process, fair hearing, and the presumption of innocence. The IYC stands firmly for justice, fairness, and the rule of law, and will resist any attempts to undermine these principles.
