Former Super Eagles striker Benedict Akwuegbu has capped a remarkable personal comeback by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Social Care from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.

 The achievement comes more than a decade after he hung up his boots, underscoring his commitment to lifelong learning and personal development. Richlist Magazine, a subsidiary of Cerutti Media Group, confirmed the milestone, noting that Akwuegbu’s academic success adds a new dimension to a football career that saw him wear the Nigerian jersey with pride on the international stage.






During his studies, Akwuegbu was a standout performer in the classroom as well as on the field. He collected multiple commendations, including the Top Achiever Award and the Employability Awards in bronze, silver and gold categories, reflecting both strong academic performance and professional readiness. The accolades were highlighted by the CEO of HC‑One, who praised Akwuegbu’s dedication, saying, “I am proud of your commitment and ongoing loyalty.” Such recognition reinforced his reputation as a disciplined and resilient individual.

Following graduation and a period of professional training, Akwuegbu has secured a position within the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS). He now works alongside nurses, doctors and consultants, applying the discipline and teamwork honed during his football days to the demanding environment of healthcare. His transition to the NHS marks a new chapter, where he continues to serve the public and inspire others who might be contemplating a career shift later in life.

Akwuegbu’s football journey





remains a source of pride for many Nigerians. He was selected for the U‑16 World Cup squad in 1989, featured for the U‑20 national side, and earned his first senior cap against Tunisia in 2000 after a successful stint in Austria. His contributions helped Nigeria reach the 2002 World Cup, where he scored two crucial goals in qualifying and earned a place in the final squad that faced England. These achievements are now complemented by his recent academic and professional milestones.
