By Mike cerutti Osagie
On November 28, 2024, a significant colloquium organized by the Wellmann Group took place in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, bringing together influential figures to discuss the urgent need for a more united Nigeria. The event, themed *“The Coast to Coast X-ray of the Nigerian Project: What Panacea,” featured former President *Goodluck Jonathan*, Delta State Governor *Sheriff Oborevwori*, and constitutional lawyer *Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN*, among others, all advocating for national unity to address the country's political challenges.
*Key Highlights from the Colloquium
*Goodluck Jonathan*, who chaired the event, emphasized the responsibility of political leaders, particularly members of the National Assembly, to foster national unity. He lamented the detrimental effects of ethnic and religious divisions in politics, stating, “Federal lawmakers must downplay this issue of my people and begin to take the whole country as your people.” Jonathan urged that the forces dividing the nation are currently too strong and that Nigerians must begin to see themselves as one cohesive nation rather than a collection of ethnic groups. He noted, “While Nigeria is not the only country with multiple nationalities, it is a country where people are yet to see themselves as common citizens of Nigeria.”In addition to advocating for unity, Jonathan called for increased local production in the oil and gas sector, highlighting the need for Nigeria to harness its resources effectively. He praised the Wellmann Group for its 20 years of operational excellence and its commitment to national development.
*Governor Sheriff Oborevwori*, represented by his deputy *Sir Monday Onyeme*, called for a national dialogue to explore practical solutions for Nigeria's myriad challenges. He suggested that constitutional adjustments could strengthen the nation’s federalism, stating, “It is in the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians that we should all come to terms with tinkering the Nigerian federation.” He emphasized the need for restructuring that would empower states to develop their unique advantages, echoing sentiments about the devolution of power to enhance governance.
*Chief Mike Ozekhome*, in his address, proposed the creation of an additional state for the South East to ensure equitable representation across regions. He advocated for a return to a parliamentary system of government, arguing that the current presidential system is overly costly and inefficient. “No country grows with so much going into recurrent expenditure. We need a lean government for us to survive,” he asserted, calling for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of Nigerians.
*Peter Obi*, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, also congratulated the Wellmann Group on its milestone, commending the speakers for their insightful contributions.
*A Collective Vision for Nigeria
The colloquium served as a platform for various leaders to share their visions for a united Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and understanding among the country's diverse populations. The discussions highlighted the need for a national dialogue to address fundamental issues and foster a sense of belonging among all Nigerians.
As the event concluded, the collective call for unity resonated strongly, with participants leaving inspired to work towards a more cohesive and prosperous Nigeria. The Wellmann Group's initiative not only celebrated its achievements but also ignited a renewed commitment to national development and unity among its citizens.
