Edo 2024: A Reflection on Primate Ayodele's Advice to Ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki One Year Ago
" A stitch in time saves nine"- Italian sayings
As Senator Monday Okphebolo is now off to the Real big deal business as the new governor of Edo State , many today could still not help but think about how Godwin Obaseki, the former governor, might have found himself in a much happier position had he heeded the guidance of Nigerian prophet, Primate Elijah Ayodele, shared back in September 2023.
Primate Ayodele is undeniably a polarizing figure—his forthrightness has earned him both admirers and adversaries. Yet, one undeniable truth remains: his prophecies tend to materialize with remarkable accuracy. Many fail to grasp that his predictions can include anyone, regardless of personal acquaintance; when his words favor them, they deem him attention-seeking, while those who find themselves on the losing end claim he is in collusion with their rivals. This level of ignorance is perplexing.
It’s vital for people, particularly Christians, to recognize that their pastor is not the sole messenger from God. You cannot dictate whom God sends your way; His will is beyond limitation. While Primate Ayodele represents a traditional faith, Obaseki is aligned with a Pentecostal church. However, should doctrinal differences have steered Obaseki from heeding Ayodele’s counsel, that would be a grave mistake. Ultimately, it’s a moot point now, as the former governor has already experienced significant embarrassment.
On September 21, 2023, Primate Ayodele, through his media aide Osho Oluwatosin, cautioned Obaseki about the rising tensions with former deputy governor, Phillip Shaibu. He urged the ex-governor to “sheath his sword,” warning that any conflict would jeopardize the PDP's chances in the upcoming election. He emphasized the need for diplomacy over discord, advising Obaseki to focus on winning rather than engaging in unnecessary battles.
He stated, “Obaseki must put down his sword; fighting his deputy will only lead to failure. He needs to approach this matter with diplomacy. I warned you three years ago that conflicts with your deputy would weaken your political standing. If issues arise, resolve them privately; airing grievances publicly won’t secure victory but rather lead to defeat. Cease this fighting.”
Primate Ayodele further warned both sides that their disputes were taking on a spiritual dimension, potentially costing the party the governorship election if they persisted. He spoke to Obaseki as a father would to a son, urging him to remember his roots and to disregard those who merely cheer for him, as they could ultimately cause greater harm.
He remarked, “This conflict is becoming increasingly spiritual and could jeopardize the PDP’s prospects in the upcoming election. Instead of uniting and strategizing for victory, you’re embroiled in conflict. This fighting must stop; there are far more pressing matters at hand. Remember, the world is small—look back at your beginnings. Don’t let pride cloud your judgment; those who applaud you today may be the very ones who bring you trouble.”
Primate Ayodele repeatedly warned Obaseki, stressing that he should avoid imposing a candidate on the party. Reflecting on this heartfelt counsel, I can’t help but wonder about the opportunities Obaseki overlooked due to his inability to embrace simple wisdom: “Don’t fight with your deputy; focus on winning.” It should have been straightforward, yet pride seems to have clouded the former governor’s judgment.
