Education Today....The Federal Ministry of Education and the (OGSTEP) Project: An Overview of the Capacity Building Training
The World Bank has initiated a capacity building training focused on *Environmental and Social Safeguards* in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and the (OGSTEP) Project.
This training aims to ensure strict adherence to environmental and social guidelines to prevent accidents and unnecessary compensation claims within communities involved in the *BESDA P4R program*.
*Objectives of the Training
The training emphasizes the importance of protecting the rights of community members and workers, highlighting the need for compliance with the *World Bank Environmental and Social Guidelines*. These guidelines serve as essential tools for promoting sustainable practices and safeguarding the environment while ensuring the well-being of all participants in the program, which spans across *Oyo, Adamawa, Katsina, and Ogun States*.

1. Environmental and Social Safeguards
: The training underscores the significance of adhering to the *six core principles* of the BESDA P4R, which include:
- Integration of Environmental and Social Considerations
- Safeguarding of Natural Resources and Cultural Resources
- Avoidance of Involuntary Resettlement and Economic Displacement
- Protecting Public Worker/Community Safety
- Effective Grievance Redress Mechanism
- Promotion of Environmental and Social Sustainability
2. Project Cycle
The training covers the *Environmental and Social Assessment (ESA) Project Cycle*, which includes:
- Identification
- Design and Presentation
- Appraisal
- Implementation
- Completion
3. Grievance Management: Participants learned about managing grievances between the BESDA and OGSTEP projects, addressing issues such as pest management, asbestos waste, and workers' rights.
*Engagement and Feedback*
The event, held at the Water Cress Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos*, provided a platform for various stakeholders, including project coordinators, officers from the Federal Ministry of Education, and the UBEC team, to engage in knowledge sharing and skill enhancement for sustainable development. It also allowed the World Bank team to gather feedback on challenges and opportunities to ensure compliance with the guidelines.
This training is a crucial step towards fostering a safe and healthy working environment while promoting sustainable development practices in Nigeria.
