Nigeria Polo Association / GTCO 2024 International Polo Tournament Sets To Gallop In Style

 

• It is not for nothing that the game of Polo is passionately called the sports of Kings

From the word go, it has been played and enjoyed by top class elites and royalties globally, with its origin emanating from the Central Asian origin

The game of polo was first played in Persia (Iran) at dates given from the 6th century to the 1st century and the game of  Polo was at first a training game for cavalry units, usually the king's guard or other elite troops.

Looking back, today once can aptly say the purpose of polo is to enjoy yourself in an exhilarating game on horseback. The objective of polo is to score more than the opposing team.

While the sport of polo is older than recorded history, we know that its origins are in the inspirational relationship between humans and horses.




 This special bond and the unique blending of athletic talents between horse and rider have helped polo evolve into The Sport of Kings. Little wonder The CEO of one of Africa’s foremost  financial institution GTCO-  Mr. Segun Agbaje, has never hidden his views on why GTCO  is deeply in involved in the sponsorship of the Lagos international tournament 

WHILE recently restating his organizations commitment to sponsoring the NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament. Agbaje, described polo as the “sport of kings” and pledged GTCO ' s  continued partnership of the event which is in line with the bank’s policy of using sports to unify Nigerians.

“We love the game of polo, the passion and the symbiosis between the players and their horses, but most importantly, we hold a strong affinity to the sport of kings because it reflects quality, competitiveness and fair play; some of the values that have made GTCO a proudly African and truly international financial institution.

“Our sponsorship of the 2024 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament, which has grown over the years to become one of the most anticipated social and sporting events of the year, demonstrates our strong belief in the role of sports in developing and uniting our society “He said

In the same Vien, all is now set for this years grand tournament and the  Organisers affirmed that the 2024 NPA/GTCO Lagos international polo tournament will begin from tommorro,January 23 to February 18 with 30 teams competing for prizes in four major and six subsidiary cadres in the country’s premier tournament dating 120 years.

Prince  Olumayowa Ogunnusi, the tournament manager, confirmed to the RichList Magazine who will be witnessing live proceedings that  s competitors would chase after the biggest prize, including the Majekodunmi Cup, in addition to the Open Cup, the Lagos Cup, and the Silver Cup.

Other prizes attached to the events are the Oba of Lagos Cup, Governor’s Cup, Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, Sani Dangote Cup, the Italian Ambassador’s Cup, the Independence Cup, Lagos Heritage Cup, Chief of Naval Cup and the Independence Cup.

According to Ogunnusi, matches for the Open Cup will be held from January 23 to 28 while the Majekodunmi Cup will run from January 30 to February 4, after which the teams competing for the Low Cup will take on each other from February 6 to 11.

"In view of the tradition, the low-goal teams will compete for the Silver Cup from February 13 to 18 to round off the month-long tournament,” he said.

Ogunnusi pledged the organisers’ “best effort to complement the sponsor’s resolve to sustain the century-old polo tournament”.

The Lagos polo tournament has for over ten decades promoted cross-cultural boundaries among competitors of diverse origins.

It has welcomed guest competitors from Europe and America. It is also the first time that the annual event would be competed for a month.
