Minister of State for Education Vs Academic Staff Union of Universities : Is Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba A Misunderstood Politician? Asks Mike Cerutti Osagie

According to an old Chinese proverb " Be not disturbed at being misunderstood; be disturbed rather at not being understanding"

This issue of being misunderstood, thus brings us to the endless strife between the current Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba Vs Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)

In fact, not so long ago, precisely about a week ago from today ,the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) came out  hard on the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, urging him to resign as minister and engage in farming.

The union had described the statement credited to the minister that striking lecturers should consider farming as an alternative profession as a reflection of his shallow understanding of the academic profession and the low premium that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration placed on education.

The minister  had earlier suggested farming to the lecturers, who are currently on strike, insisting that they cannot dictate how they should be paid by their employers.

But ASUU Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter, Prof. Ayo Akinwole, in a statement issued promptly said the minister has displayed his naivety on educational matters, calling Hon Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba all sort of names

But in a swift reaction last night, a top aide of the Honourable Minister of State for Education Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba described ASUU's outburst as unfortunate

" Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba's advice was for the lecturers to go back to their lecture rooms and work for the betterment of our youths; the

minister meant no harm, he was simply being misunderstood but sooner or later, he will be vindicated

• Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba : A brief Profile of a lawyer turned Politician

A lot has been said about him; but  who really is he? Our research on him proved the following

Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba is from Ehime-Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, and was born on August 20, 1967.

He was called to the Nigerian bar in 1989, after pursuing his LLM at University of Lagos and PhD at the University of Jos, respectively.

He had served as House of Representatives committee chairman on Land, Housing and works from 1999 to 2003 before contesting Imo governorship on the platform of APP in 2003, 2007 and as CPC candidate in 2011.

He was secretary of the Constitution Drafting Committee that produced the Constitution of the merger committee to form the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2013.

Nwajiuba contested the Imo State governorship election in 2003,  challenging the then incumbent governor, Chief Achike Udenwa of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has been President Muhammadu Buhari’s most trusted ally from the time of APP till date and they shared father / son relationship

He coordinated the political pressure group that bought 2019 All Progressive Congress, APC, presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nwajiuba,  who remains a core APC member, won election into the House of Representatives to represent Okigwe North Constituency under the ticket of the Accord Party in the 2019 poll.

He defected to the ruling APC shortly after his nomination for the minister and subsequent screening by the Senate.

Said to be nursing the huge ambition to be IMO State Governor in future, the lawyer turned politician is a tireless philanthropist,

avid reader and enjoys spending quality time with people of his constituency and with youths many of whom sees in him a worthy role model who is always ready to listen to them

Will his long strife with ASUU finally come to an end in no distance time ? Close industry watchers are quick to advice than the earlier their hatchet of disagreements are buried, the better for our educational future
