IT is no doubt a beginning of a new dawn for Yak” Yakubu Ayegbeni , the former international star striker and master class showman
,on and of the pitch who prides with a
record 252 games and 95 goals in the Premier League, 57 international
matches for the Super Eagles with 21 goals
– “Yak” is no doubt one
of the greatest of Nigerian football
alive , and now his scarifies has paid off bountifully as he has now been made ambassador for the top online gaming pioneer Interwetten in
the Nigerian market.
Interwetten,
founded thirty years ago, announced its entry into the Nigerian market in March
this year – a significant milestone for the company. With the signing of Yakubu
Ayegbeni, a high-profile ambassador now to be integrated into all advertising
activities, Interwetten shows its commitment to Nigeria as a major market for
the company. It is the first time in its history Interwetten will
partner with an official ambassador on this large scale.
Yakubu
will feature in communications throughout Nigeria, including major print and
online advertising. In addition, a unique betting feature called “Yakubu Tip”
will feature on social me-dia and interwetten.ng each week. Yakubu will also
carry out appearances for Interwetten in
Nigeria.
The signing marks an important step for Interwetten and
shows intent to be in Nigeria for the long-term. Interwetten will
also participate in local social projects together with Yakubu.
Yakubu Ayegbeni: ” When
choosing my partners, it is really important to me that the chemis- try is
right and that was immediately obvious after the first talks. Interwetten has
been a reliable and serious partner in sports for decades, in countries all
over Europe. It will be a very exciting partnership and homecoming for me too!”
Dominik Beier, Speaker of the
Board at Interwetten: “We are very happy that with
Yak we can embrace great things. The passion for football is enormous in
Nigeria, footballers are idols. It was therefore clear to us that, for the
first time in the history of the company, we would be looking to partner with a
former Nigerian professional footballer as our official ambassador. In Yakubu we
feel we have found that perfect partner and look forward to experiencing the
excellence of Nigerian football fans for ourselves. We want to ensure that our
customers in Nigeria receive the highest quality product, so we were also
looking for someone who had set an example of this during his career. We are
just at the beginning of a long journey in Nigeria, now it really starts!”
Nicknamed The Yak, he is a
powerful striker and one feared by Premiership defenses. After being courted by
many clubs, Yakubu signed for Middlesbrough for £7.5 million in 2005 and ended
the season as the club’s top goalscorer with 19 league and cup goals
.
.
He formed a formidable
partnership with Mark Viduka and helped spearhead Boro into the UEFA Cup final
in 2006.Yakubu's Everton career got off to a flying start when he scored on his
debut against Bolton Wanderers.
He remained a constant scoring threat throughout the season,
notching a career best 21 goals.
That haul included hat-tricks against Fulham and SK Brann. But
it wasn't an unblemished season for the striker as he was dropped by David
Moyes following a late return from the African Cup of Nations.
Yakubu was the first Toffees player to score more than 20 goals
in a season since Peter Beardsley in 1992.
And he began the 2008/09 campaign in similar fashion, notching
four times in the first five games.
Sadly though, his season ended in late November when a ruptured
Achilles as Tottenham ruled him out until the summer of 2009.
Yakubu made his comeback in September 2009, and scored in the
Carling Cup at Hull that month. He then featured regularly before heading to
the African Cup of Nations after Christmas.
Yakubu was then selected in the Nigeria squad for the 2010 World
Cup alongside then Everton team-mate Joseph Yobo.
The striker started all three games for the Super Eagles in
South Africa, and netted in the final group game against South Korea. But
Yakubu is likely to be remembered for a high-profile close range miss in the
same game.
