“Charity is a supreme virtue, and
the great channel through which the mercy of God is passed onto mankind”-
Conrad Hilton
When
growing up as a little kid, Benue first lady, Dr. Mrs. Eunice Ortom read a
story on Mother Therese , the great giver of hoe to the hopeless, and she keyed
in-signed a pact with God and kept dreaming
Her
covenant with God? Make me great and
successful and I will dedicate all my entire life touching lives of the poor,
needy and disadvantage in the land
Today,
like every dream comes true, Dr. Mrs. Eunice Ortom has risen to top of women politics
and now the First lady of Benue state, her Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF) is
a pet project Founded in May last year, the foundation only recently celebrated
her first anniversary where the founder unveiled the cardinal objectives behind
its formation and equally highlighted some modest achievements it has recorded
within the period under review.
This is
vintage charity giver Mrs. Ortom for you, hear her in a revert to WORLD
LEADERS, CHARITY UNIT
“I chose to be a source that would
reflect joy, happiness, rejuvenation, renewal, whatever good that would lead
to meaningful life. It is my wish that the Eunice Spring of Life will be known
as one reserved for those who may truly need us to be a spring in their steps,
sunshine in their dark hours, or water to wet their dry land and warmth in
their season of winter.”
“The funds that will be raised today
(14th May, 2016) will partly be used to build a cancer centre, the money
donated will be used to acquire modern medical equipment. We will offer cancer
testing (free) and treatment services and work to do away with stigmatization,
which leads many women with cervical cancer to live in self-denial and claim
that the ailment they are suffering from is fibroid.
“Today is a great day for us seated
here to support and contribute to having a mother and child hospital where
pregnant women and children from 0-5 years can access free medical care
beginning in our state capital and God willing in our Local Government Areas.”
ON HER NGO’S ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR, SHE
OPINES
“In the area of health, over twenty thousand
people have benefited from the free medical outreaches carried out across Benue
State under the BEWIP (a prayer group initiative of the Founder) and ESLF
collaborations, and the most recent ESLF mega medical outreach that included
surgeries, incisions, excisions and minor refractive eye treatment amongst
other health care services. Fourteen cancer patients are currently undergoing
treatment in their different stages at the Benue State University Teaching
Hospital. Work has commenced and is ongoing at the site for the first Oncology
Center in the North
Central, it is the Founder’s hope
that the centre would be completed and commissioned before the second anniversary
of the foundation. The attraction of UNICEF increased funding to Benue State
through the active participation of the Founder in the campaign against
HIV/AIDS especially in adolescents and young persons. Land h was also been
acquired for the building of the rehabilitation centre for mother and child
care.’’
In Education, she informed that the
foundation has so far achieved thus; “the Foundation has given scholarships to
students in secondary, tertiary institutions and law school. Literacy campaign
has been carried out in two editions now; extra-curricular activities were
organized last summer like talent development and sports. Recently
scholarships were given to 350 candidates for the 2017 JAMB/UTME. Screening is
ongoing to select students for next session’s scholarship for both secondary
and tertiary.
“In Agriculture, Dr Ortom said, “the
Foundation embarked on a farming project in four communities Raav, Howe,
Taraku and Aondoana in Gwer West LGA of Benue State, where soy beans, maize and
sesame were cultivated. The project yielded a harvest of over a hundred bags of
the crops which was evenly distributed between the Foundation and the
community. Fifty hectares of land has been acquired for demonstration farms
where the Foundation in partnership with modern technique farmers like Songhai
Farms from Porto Novo, will be training farmers to step down modern
agricultural techniques in their farming activities to boost their
productivity. This will go a long way to boost the economy of the state too.’’
