With those profound words, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede defined not just his banking philosophy, but his life philosophy. Last Thursday, September 24, at the prestigious Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria stood still to celebrate a titan who gave equity a human face in banking. He just celebrated his 60th birthday.

He is Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, FCIB, CFR, the Nigerian businessman, banker, investor and Chairman of Access Holdings. At 60, he stands tall as Africa's greatest turnaround banker — the giant of institutional building who, together with his brother in vision, took Access Bank from number 65 in Nigeria in 2002 to one of Africa's largest financial services groups today.

His legacies are institutions that will outlive him. He built Access Bank Plc into a Tier One global powerhouse. He built Access Holdings Plc with footprints across three continents, eighteen countries and over 60 million customers. He built Coronation Group — Coronation Merchant Bank, Coronation Asset Management, Coronation Insurance. He built EnterpriseNGR to position Nigeria as Africa's financial centre and hub for global capital.



But his heart beats beyond banking. His philanthropy is legendary yet silent. Through the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, which he co-founded with his beloved wife Ofovwe, he has transformed primary healthcare in Nigeria, adopting 23 PHCs and giving hope to the poorest. Through the Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) at Oxford Blavatnik School of Government, he funds scholarships for future African leaders and drives public sector reform that is changing how government works.

He is a lover of fine art, a true patron of African creativity. His love for art is not just collection, it is preservation of our culture, it is investment in our creative economy. He sees art the way he sees equity — as value that must be nurtured to grow.

He is also a polo enthusiast — elegant, disciplined, strategic, just like his game. On the polo turf in Lagos and around the world, he plays with the same precision, teamwork and competitive spirit that he brought to the boardroom.

And who can talk about Aigboje without talking about loyalty? His loyalty to his best friend, brother and partner, the late Dr Herbert Wigwe, CFR, remains one of the most touching stories of friendship in Nigerian business. From GTBank to Access Bank to building an empire together, their bond was unbreakable. Even in death, he continues to honour Wigwe's legacy, standing firm for the Access family and keeping their shared dream alive.



The Eko Hotel celebration brought together presidents, governors, kings, captains of industry and the international community — not just to celebrate his wealth, but his values, his humility, his intellect and his integrity.
