Politics Now....HON. DR. E. AGBODO SPEAKS ON HIS VISION FOR NIGERIA PRESIDENCY

Human Right activist's, clergyman and humanitarian,Hon. Dr. E. Agbodo has spoken candidly on his vision for Nigeria’s presidency as the 2027 general elections draw closer, weighing whether he should contest under the 2027 AGBODO SOLIDARITY SUPPORT ORGANISATION. He said Nigerians are passing through trying times globally, from economic readjustment at home to stringent visa rules in the U.S. and xenophobic attacks in South Africa, but urged citizens to seize the opportunities within these challenges rather than dwell in despair. His assurance remains that Nigeria is only passing through a phase and will eventually rise as a fully developed nation.

Agbodo emphasized that election season should be a platform for presenting ideas that can improve the lives of the people, regardless of whether they are accepted or rejected. For him, contesting is not only about winning but about injecting fresh perspectives into governance. He noted that this conviction is driving him to respond to the growing calls from his supporters to run for the apex office in 2027.

He traced his commitment to Nigeria to a lifelong love for humanity and country, which has shaped his activism since his youth. As a student union and human rights activist, he founded THE TOMORROW AFRICANS (TTA) in 1992, and in 1994 the group played a key role in resisting military rule during the June 12 struggle to restore Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s mandate. His dedication was also evident in his 1994 One Man Rag protest, where he wore rags for days to symbolize Nigeria’s suffering under misrule, ending with the burning of the rags to signify the hope for freedom and democracy.

Agbodo recalled trekking long distances during the June 12-Kokori NUPENG strike, mobilizing Nigerians and distributing anti-military flyers while engaging soldiers, including those at Ojo Barracks in Lagos, to return to the barracks and allow civilian rule. On the first day of the strike, he trekked from Agbara Estate along the Badagry expressway to Anthony Village, where he met Dr. Beko Ransom Kuti of the Campaign for Democracy, who immediately supported TTA by photocopying its flyers. TTA later led a protest to the United Nations Office in Ikoyi, demanding that Gen. Abacha hand over power to Abiola.

His activism continued after democracy was restored. In 2005, concerned about financial corruption eroding the dividends of democracy, he formed the COALITION OF NIGERIANS AGAINST CORRUPTION (CONAC) and carried out a One Man Anti-Corruption March from the Central Bank of Nigeria headquarters to the National Secretariat in Abuja. The march was covered nationwide by NTA after he proceeded alone when others pulled out over fear of arrest.

Agbodo revealed that he has aspired to the presidency more than three times, approaching parties including Alliance for a United Nigeria, National Rescue Movement, and Peoples Redemption Party, where he had a fruitful meeting with Alhaji Balarabe Musa in Kaduna in 2019. He was again denied the NRM presidential ticket in 2023 before opting to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Isoko North/South Federal Constituency to advance his national agenda through the legislature.

Now, as his supporters push him to run in 2027, Agbodo said he is still considering the financial burden and the shortcomings of Nigeria’s electoral system, but remains motivated by the pain of seeing youths wasted by bad governance. He shared a flyer from his supporters outlining his plans if elected and called on Nigerians at home and abroad to contribute ideas, stressing that the time has come for Nigeria to rise economically so that every citizen can smile again.
