World Maleria Day.....NCAA DG CAPT. NAJOMO URGES AFRICA TO SCALE UP MALARIA FIGHT, HAILS TINUBU

Malaria is a silent flight risk to Africa’s development. It grounds our children, disrupts our workforce, and threatens the altitude we all want our continent to attain.”

That was the strong call from global aviation expert and Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Ona Najomo, JP, as he advised Nigerian and African governments to invest more in the global fight against malaria.

Speaking in commemoration of World Malaria Day, Capt. Najomo lamented that young children and adults still die daily from malaria across Nigeria and Africa. He described the disease as a national emergency that undermines human capital, productivity, and even aviation safety, noting that a sick population cannot power a thriving economy or sustain a 24-hour aviation industry. From the cockpit to the cabin crew, he said, malaria weakens the workforce that keeps Africa connected to the world.

The NCAA DG commended President

Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for intentionally fighting malaria like never before. He cited the renewed political will, increased budgetary attention to primary healthcare, and the push for local vaccine production as clear signs that Nigeria is finally treating malaria as a security and economic threat. “We are seeing coordination across health, finance, and research that was missing before. That is leadership,” Najomo stated.

As an aviation regulator, Capt. Najomo drew a parallel between air safety and public health. Just as no aircraft is allowed to fly with a known defect, he argued, no nation should advance while carrying the burden of malaria. He urged African governments to allocate more funds to vector control, rapid diagnostic kits, community health insurance, and research into next-generation interventions. He also called for public-private partnerships, saying airlines, airports, and aviation stakeholders should join the malaria eradication campaign through CSR and passenger health education.

As the world marks World Malaria Day on April 25, Capt. Chris Ona Najomo’s charge is clear: “We have safe skies because we invest in safety. We can have a malaria-free Africa if we invest in health.” He insisted that defeating malaria is not charity but strategy, adding that Africa’s GDP will not take off until malaria is grounded. “Budget for it. Fight it. End it,” he declared.
