World Maleria Day .....NED NWOKO URGES NIGERIA, AFRICAN GOVTS TO SCALE UP MALARIA FIGHT

Malaria is not just a disease. It is a daily tragedy that steals our children, weakens our workforce, and holds back our continent.” With that warning, businessman and philanthropist Prince Ned Nwoko has called on Nigerian and African governments to invest more aggressively in the global fight against malaria.

Speaking  of World Malaria Day, Ned Nwoko lamented that young children and adults still die daily from a disease that is both preventable and treatable. He described malaria as Africa’s silent emergency, noting that the continent carries over 90% of the global malaria burden. For him, the statistics are not just numbers. They represent families shattered, school days lost, and economic productivity drained across communities.

Nwoko, who has long championed malaria eradication through the Ned Nwoko Foundation, stressed that governments must move beyond token budgets and conferences. He urged increased funding for research, local vaccine production, vector control, and environmental sanitation. According to him, Africa cannot continue to depend solely on donor support while malaria claims thousands of lives each year. Investment, he said, must be deliberate, sustained, and homegrown.

The former lawmaker also called for stronger public-private partnerships to drive innovation in diagnostics, treatment, and community education. He noted that rural areas, where health facilities are scarce and awareness is low, remain the worst hit. Without clean environments, access to insecticide-treated nets, and rapid testing, he warned, the cycle of infection and death will persist.

As the world marks World Malaria Day on April 25, Ned Nwoko’s message to African leaders is direct: treat malaria as an economic and security issue, not just a health problem. “If we can fund elections and infrastructure, we can fund the war against malaria,” he said. “Every child saved is a future secured for Africa.”
