Richlist International Special Report: Tony Elumelu’s Tribute to Aliko Dangote in TIME — “Alicash, The Africapitalist”

In a string of tribute published by TIME International, serial investor and Heirs Holdings Chairman Tony O. Elumelu celebrated his friend Aliko Dangote, describing him as “the greatest African entrepreneur of our time.” The piece moves beyond business accolades to capture the man behind the myth.

Elumelu opens with humility: “It is an honour to write about Aliko but the real honor is knowing the man behind the myth.” He reveals a personal side of Africa’s richest man, referring to him fondly as ‘Alicash’, a nickname that speaks to both their brotherhood and Dangote’s legendary deal-making ability.

The tribute traces Dangote’s journey as proof of possibility. “He’s shown us what’s possible when you don’t quit,” Elumelu writes, pointing to decades of persistence that turned trading roots into a pan-African industrial empire spanning cement, sugar, salt, fertilizer, and now oil refining.

Elumelu frames Dangote not just as a capitalist, but as an _Africapitalist_ — his own philosophy that the private sector must drive Africa’s prosperity. “Cheers to my dear friend, Alicash - the Africapitalist!” he toasts, linking Dangote’s impact to job creation, value addition, and long-term nation building.

The piece highlights Dangote’s scale of ambition. From the world’s largest single-train refinery to continent-wide manufacturing footprints, Elumelu notes that Dangote dreams in numbers that scare others, then executes with discipline and patriotism.

Beyond balance sheets, Elumelu celebrates character. He describes a friend who picks calls, keeps his word, and remains accessible despite global stature. It is this blend of humility and audacity, he suggests, that makes Dangote a role model for young African entrepreneurs.

Elumelu also acknowledges the sacrifices behind the success. He alludes to sleepless nights, regulatory battles, and massive risk-taking that most never see. Dangote’s story, he argues, redefines resilience for a generation told to play it safe.

The tribute connects Dangote’s work to Africa’s self-reliance agenda. By building local capacity and reducing import dependence, Elumelu says Dangote has advanced economic sovereignty more than speeches ever could. Industrialization, not aid, is the path he has championed.

For Elumelu, friendship and partnership intersect. Both men share a belief that wealth must create more wealth for society. Dangote’s factories employ thousands directly and millions indirectly, proving that profit and purpose can coexist when leadership is intentional.

TIME’s platform gave global weight to what Africans already know: Dangote is a symbol. Elumelu’s words stripped away the mystique to show a friend, a builder, and a believer in Africa’s future. The tribute ends as it began — with brotherhood, respect, and a challenge to the next generation to build boldly and not quit.
