In loving Memory....Five Years Remembrance: Yinka Odumakin, Human Rights Activist and Still Living Legend Who Fought for Democracy

"To die early is to be summoned by history before the work is done, yet your footprints outlive your breath."

Five years after his transition, Yinka Odumakin, husband of Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, remains a towering figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

Yinka Odumakin was a journalist, strategist, and fearless human rights activist whose life was defined by resistance to tyranny. From his student union days at Obafemi Awolowo University to the trenches of NADECO, he chose the hard path of speaking truth to power.

He emerged as one of the most consistent voices during Nigeria’s military era. As National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, he articulated the case for restructuring, justice, and true federalism. His press statements were bold, his arguments rooted in law and history.

Married to Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of Women Arise and Centre for Change, their union became a powerhouse of advocacy. Together they raised a family inside the struggle, balancing parenthood with protests, detentions, and the daily risks of activism.

Yinka’s weapon was his pen and his voice. His weekly columns in national dailies dissected government policy, exposed corruption, and educated citizens on their rights. He believed an informed people could not be easily oppressed.

He suffered for his beliefs. The Abacha years brought arrests, surveillance, and intimidation. Yet he returned to the streets each time, convinced that democracy was not a gift from soldiers but a right to be claimed by the people.

Beyond activism, he was a coalition builder. Yinka worked with labor, students, ethnic groups, and civil society to sustain a united pro-democracy front. He understood that dictatorship thrives on division, so he built bridges across Nigeria’s fault lines.

Five years after his passing in April 2021, the issues he fought for remain alive. Debates on restructuring, electoral integrity, and police reform still dominate national discourse. His arguments are quoted, his warnings remembered, and his courage referenced.

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin has carried the torch forward. Through civic education, election observation, and campaigns for justice, she has ensured that Yinka’s death did not end their shared mission. Their home remains a hub for activists and young democrats.

Yinka Odumakin may have died early, but his legend lives. Five years on, he is remembered not only as Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin’s husband, but as a patriot who gave his all for Nigeria’s democracy. His life still asks us one question: what are we willing to sacrifice for freedom?

• May his gentle soul continue to rest in peace
