International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated globally to recognize women's contributions and push for equal rights and opportunities. The day has its roots in early 20th-century movements where women demanded fair wages, voting rights, and safer working conditions.

The benefits of IWD to women are numerous. It raises awareness about issues affecting women, promotes gender equality, celebrates women's achievements, empowers women, encourages solidarity, and drives positive change.
This year's IWD global theme is "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls," providing a framework for meaningful dialogue on strengthening accountability, transparency, and inclusive economic participation.
Several organizations, including Wema Bank and Continental Hotels Group, are hosting events to commemorate IWD 2026. Wema Bank's event, themed "When Women Gain, We Grow," will feature awards, panel discussions, and the launch of the Wema Bank Girl Child Journal.
The Women's Rights in Human Right Conference 2026 is also happening on March 5, 2026, at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, focusing on championing women's rights as fundamental human rights.
