Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, recently emphasized the need for African governments to partner with the private sector to transform rural economies. Speaking at the 49th IFAD Governing Council in Rome, Elumelu identified three key areas to make agriculture a viable career for Africa's youth: electricity access, blended finance, and business education 

Elumelu stressed that food security is fundamental to societal development, and collaboration between governments and the private sector is crucial to increase food production. He believes that making rural economies more attractive and agriculture more appealing to young people is essentials 

The Tony Elumelu Foundation has already made significant strides in empowering entrepreneurs, with 21% of its 24,000 beneficiaries in agribusiness, generating approximately 480,000 jobs across the continent. Women lead 55% of these ventures, showcasing the impact of empowering women in entrepreneurship 

Elumelu's call for partnership is rooted in his Africapitalism philosophy, which promotes private sector-led economic development in Africa. He advocates for long-term investments in strategic sectors like agriculture, power, and healthcare 


Access to electricity is a significant challenge, with energy poverty limiting digital innovation in agriculture. Elumelu urged governments to improve electricity supplies, enabling young people to leverage technology 

Blended finance models, combining philanthropy with commercial capital, can bypass traditional banking hurdles and support small-scale enterprises. Elumelu emphasized the importance of business education to equip young entrepreneurs with necessary skills

The event, attended by 500 global leaders, including ministers, UN officials, and development experts, highlighted the need for cooperation to transform rural economies. Elumelu's message resonated with the audience, emphasizing the potential of agriculture to drive economic growth
