Special Report.....Ex Super Eagles International, Ben Akwuegbu aka Austria bomber speaks Passionately On Victor Osimhen's Talent & Why He Wants Nigeria to be At World Cup 2026
• Introduction
Ben Akwuegbu, the retired Nigerian football legend better known as the "Austria Bomber," has a storied career etched in goals and grit. Born on November 3, 1974, in Jos, Nigeria, Akwuegbu dazzled fans in top leagues across Europe and Asia, including RC Lens (France), Grazer AK (Austria), and Qingdao Jonoon (China).
His precision earned him 35 caps and 10 goals for the Super Eagles, including a standout performance at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Today, despite domiciled in London UK, Akwuegbu channels his passion into nurturing talent as founder of Ben Akwuegbu FC, a Jos-based club competing in Nigeria’s Nationwide League One. In an exclusive interview with Cerutti Media from London, last night he shared urgent insights on Victor Osimhen’s form and Nigeria’s World Cup 2026 hopes in a long Series interview session
His words:“Victor Osimhen is about one of the best strikers in the world today,” Akwuegbu declared. “It will be disastrous if he or this crop of Eagles miss out on the World Cup.” His confidence stems from Osimhen’s recent heroics: a hat-trick for Galatasaray in the Champions League, making him Nigeria’s top European scorer (25 goals) and surpassing legends like Obafemi Martins.
Akwuegbu, who represented Nigeria at the 2002 World Cup, knows the tournament’s impact firsthand. “I met my role model, David Beckham, and even exchanged jerseys with him,” he recalled. His message to Osimhen? “Show up at the World Cup. Your work rate is impressive.” The 49-year-old’s humility and dedication to Nigerian football echo through his words, proving success is built on grit, not just talent.
While Akwuegbu praises Osimhen’s talent, he warns against overreliance. “Coach Chelle must devise strategies that don’t see us depending solely on Osimhen—all eyes are on him.” Nigeria’s attack needs balance; pairing Osimhen with Ademola Lookman or new catch Akor could maximize their firepower. “We must play with two strikers,” Akwuegbu insists, urging an attacking style reminiscent of Nigeria’s 1994 golden era.
The stakes are high. Nigeria is about to confront Gabon in the World cup playoffs in Morocco and Missing the 2026 World Cup would be a national tragedy, Akwuegbu stresses. “A second consecutive absence would be unthinkable,” he says. The path to qualification demands wins against Gabon / Cameroon or DRC congo plus tactical smarts from Chelle.
Akwuegbu backs Eric Chelle’s appointment but urges discipline. “No more experiments. We need experienced players and a 4-4-2 formation—our tradition.” The coach must blend stars like Osimhen, Lookman, and Moses Simon into a cohesive unit, leveraging their European experience.
For Akwuegbu, this isn’t just about football. “The Super Eagles represent over 200 million Nigerians. We mustn’t let them down, football is like religion in Nigeria
“Nigeria has the talent,” Akwuegbu declares. “But talent alone isn’t enough. We need focus, teamwork, and faith. Osimhen must lead, but we all play a role. Let’s avoid 2022’s regret. The 2026 World Cup is our moment.”
“I’ll be happy if Osimhen shows up at the World Cup. His work rate is too high and impressive.
In the same vein, Ben Akwuegbu used the opportunity to commend the NFF boss Dr Ibrahim Gusau who he said is doing very good job for Nigeria football, " he is working hard To make sure Nigeria go to world cup and I think his combination with NSC chairman Shehu Dikko is amazing, they will do it takes for Nigeria to be in world cup " The Austria bomber stated categorically
