NUGA Games triumph...Osagie Lauds UNIJOS Women’s Basketball Triumph at 2025 NUGA Games, Urges Greater Youth Sports Support

The 2025 National Universities Games (NUGA) women’s basketball final, held recently , concluded with a hard‑fought victory for the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Lady Warriors, who edged out the Bayero University Kano (BUK) squad 35‑31.

The decisive match drew a distinguished audience, underscoring the growing interest in university‑level women’s sports across Nigeria. Among the spectators were key sports administrators from Plateau State, who used the occasion to celebrate the achievement and to call for increased investment in youth athletics.

Speaking on behalf of the former leadership of the Plateau State Basketball Association, Mr. Sunny Osagie aka Taurus extended his heartfelt congratulations to the UNIJOS team.

He highlighted the team’s disciplined performance, noting that the 35‑31 scoreline reflected both the talent of the players and the dedication of their coaches. Osagie emphasized that such victories should serve as a catalyst for broader support for sports development, particularly for young women who often face limited opportunities in the field.

Also present was Dr. Chollom Paul Lomak, the current Chairman of Basketball on the Plateau, who stood to Osagie’s right. Dr. Lomak praised the collaborative spirit evident at the event, pointing to the presence of Hon. (Dr) Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association, who was seated at the centre of the dignitaries. The towering figure of Hon. Kwande, who is also the tallest among the officials, symbolized the unified commitment of Plateau’s sports leadership to nurture talent across all codes.

Hon. Kwande, speaking live from the final, commended the UNIJOS Lady Warriors for their resilience and skill, and called on government, corporate sponsors, and community stakeholders to channel more resources toward youth sports programmes. He argued that success at the NUGA level not only brings glory to individual institutions but also inspires a generation of athletes who could represent Nigeria on the international stage. “When our youths excel in sports, we lay a foundation for national pride and healthier communities,” he said.

The ceremony concluded with a round of applause for the victorious UNIJOS team and a pledge from the Plateau State sports administrators to pursue initiatives that will enhance facilities, provide scholarships, and create pathways for young athletes. As the NUGA legacy continues to grow, the hope is that stories like that of the UNIJOS women’s basketball team will galvanize sustained support, ensuring that the flame of sporting excellence burns brighter for Nigeria’s youth.
