Anioma Alive...Governors, Southeast Lawmakers, Traditional Rulers, and Anioma Leaders to Meet in Awka to Adopt Anioma State
By Mike Cerutti Osagie
Abuja, Nigeria – The campaign for the creation of Anioma State has reached a critical milestone, with Senator Ned Nwoko confirming that key stakeholders from the South East region will convene in Awka next weekend to formally adopt Anioma as the preferred state. Speaking at the Izu Anioma Towns Union event in Abuja, where the inaugural Anioma Cultural Festival was launched, Nwoko announced that 97 senators have endorsed the initiative, marking an unprecedented level of support in Nigeria’s state creation history.
The event honored distinguished Anioma leaders, including Nwoko, who represents Delta North and serves as the union’s patron. He revealed that he introduced the Anioma State Creation Bill two years ago, proposing the state be formed from Delta North’s nine local government areas: four from Aniocha and Oshimili, two from Ika, and three from Ndokwa. Neighboring communities like Igbanke have expressed interest in joining.
Both the Senate and House Committees on Constitutional Amendment agree that the South East deserves a sixth state to restore regional equity. “Anioma is the most viable and constitutionally sound option,” Nwoko emphasized. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and President Bola Tinubu have pledged support, pending fulfillment of constitutional requirements.
The roadmap includes: submission of documentation to the Presidency ,approval by state assemblies and governors
If successful, Anioma will become one of two states in the new Delta region, with Asaba as its capital
Nwoko urged Anioma people to remain united: _“I didn’t start this struggle, but I will finish it. Anioma State will mark a new beginning.”
Chief Luke Enelichi, President of the Izu Anioma Towns Union, stressed the demand is rooted in justice and identity, not politics. “Despite Anioma’s contributions, we lack a state reflecting our heritage. We are one Anioma—Aniocha, Ndokwa, Ika, Oshimili,” he declared, calling on leaders to act for fair representation and development.
The meeting signals a decisive phase. “We’ve done our homework. Nothing is being left undone,” Nwoko assured. Anioma’s creation promises
