Historic landmark setting...NUJ FCT Council Commends Governors’ Endorsement of Reserved Seats for Women Bill
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, under the leadership of Comrade Grace Ike, commends the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for its progressive stance in endorsing the Reserved Seats for Women Bill (HB 1349), which seeks to enhance women’s representation in governance at both national and subnational level
In a statement Ike said the landmark decision, announced at the conclusion of the NGF’s 5th meeting held on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, marks a bold and commendable step toward strengthening gender equity, inclusion, and democratic participation in Nigeria’s political space.
She said the NUJ FCT Council recognizes that the proposed constitutional amendment, aimed at creating special constituencies exclusively contested by women, represents a pragmatic intervention to correct historical imbalances in legislative representation and to advance the cause of gender justice in Nigeria.
Comrade Grace Ike lauds the Governors for demonstrating foresight and political will in supporting this bill and urges members of the National and State Assemblies to follow suit by voting in favor of the legislation during the November 4–6, 2025 sessions.
She also calls on the media, civil society, and all stakeholders to sustain advocacy and public enlightenment on the importance of inclusive governance as a catalyst for national development.
