Abia State, Nigeria – Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Professor Mike Ozekhome has called on the judiciary to uphold fairness in resolving electoral disputes to protect the integrity and legality of electoral processes. Speaking at Gregory University Uturu (GUU) during its 9th Convocation Lecture titled “The Judiciary As The Final Arbiter Of Electoral Outcomes: Aberrations And Judgements Without Justice,” Ozekhome emphasized the judiciary's crucial role in safeguarding democracy.
Ozekhome highlighted the judiciary's pivotal position as both a *shield and a sword* in the pursuit of free and fair elections. He stated that the effective interpretation and application of electoral laws are essential for addressing conflicts that arise during elections, reinforcing public confidence in the democratic process.
“By providing a platform to resolve electoral grievances, the Judiciary reinforces the rule of law and public trust in democratic institutions,” he noted. However, he cautioned that the judiciary's intervention, while strengthening democracy, could also undermine its core principles if not managed carefully.
The convocation ceremony celebrated the graduation of *240 postgraduate students*, with 16 achieving *First Class degrees*. Ozekhome and former Power Minister Barth Nnaji were honored with *honorary doctorate degrees*, alongside Professor Evaristus Anyaehie, who was recognized as an *emeritus professor
In his address to the graduates, Chancellor Mr. Okechukwu Gregory Ibe Jnr. encouraged them to reflect on their journey and cultivate innovation, resilience, and a heart of service. Vice Chancellor Professor Cele Njoku reminded graduates to cherish their alma mater and continue supporting one another.
Professor Augustine Uwakwe, the immediate past VC and current Pro-Chancellor, remarked that education extends beyond career preparation, serving as a key to unlocking opportunities. He urged graduates to carry values of curiosity, integrity, and a passion for lifelong learning as they embark on their new journeys.
