The Serial Philantropist, Sheriff Set To Serve His People More As Delta state Governor Elect

No one has ever become poor from giving.

By Mike Cerutti Osagie

History was made over the weekend, when top flight Politician and philantropist Rt Hon

Sheriff Oborevwori  of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sheriff Oborevwori, was declared  winner of the governorship election in Delta State by the Independent National Electoral Commission

According to the results announced  by Mr Monday Udoh-Tom, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Oborevwori won 21 out of the 25 local government areas collated in the state to defeat his closest rival, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Ovie Omo-Agege.

Oborevwori polled 360,234 votes, Omo-Agege polled 240,229, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate, Chief Great  Ogboru, got 11,029 votes.

Out of the 25 local governments in the state, of which PDP’s Oborevwori won in 21 of them, APC’s Omo-Agege won the remaining four local government areas.

This is no doubt a pay back time for Oborevwori who is regarded by many at home and abroad as a tireless giver of hope to the hopeless

His emergence as the new Governor Elect of the oil rich Delta state can in no way be described as a story of grass to grace

Oborevwori  had began his political career as a grassroot politician; Chairman of the Okpe Community.

However he broke into limelight in 2015 after he was elected as the member representing Okpe State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly under the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP).

This is after 19 years of serving in several key government positions first beginning as a Councillor in 1996.

He was elected speaker of Delta State House of Assembly on 11 May 2017 following the impeachment of the then Speaker, Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya.

He was re-elected in 2019 as Speaker for a second term following his victory at the polls to represent his constituency, the Okpe State Constituency at the Delta State House of Assembly.

A life of giving

Joan Marques was point-blank Right when he mused thus:

“It’s easier to take than to give. It’s nobler to give than to take. The thrill of taking lasts a day. The thrill of giving lasts a lifetime.

Such can be said to be the lifestyle and attitude of the newly Governor Elect of Delta state

For example it is on record that till recently  Rt. Hon. Oborevwori has  provided scholarships to countless indigenes  and non-indigene students in both Delta and beyond in addition to several  other empowerment packs running into several millions of  naira

Only recently, the educational support programme which was launched under the Oborevwori Foundation Scholarship Scheme was accompanied by other entrepreneurship support/empowerment endeavours to support petty traders, market women and artisans.

The philanthropic gesture witnessed the donation of 24 buses/cars 10 tricycles, 20 hair dressing saloon kits, including generators, 40 grinding machines for millers, 30 sewing machines for tailors, 20 deep freezers for market women in frozen food business and clothing hundreds of clothing for widows.

The new Governor Elect Sheriff by his victory may have been indirectly paid back by the people via their votes

Here is no doubt a serial humanitarian who lived by this philosophy of

Anne Frank which says “No one has ever become poor from giving.
