History was made in Kano over the weekend when Elumelu foundation pledge to empower 1000 entrepreneurs in northern Nigeria
The renowned banker and founder of Tony Elumelu Foundation, Dr . Tony Elumelu has promised to train and empower the young entrepreneurs in Northern Nigeria and the 7 Sahel Regions to reduce the challenges of unemployment in the country.
The Pan-African philanthropist made the commitment while receiving a Doctor of Business Administration, Honoris Causa, at the 35th Convocation ceremony of the Bayero University Kano
He said the skill acquisition component of the empowerment programme will last for three months after which the successful ones will be given startup capitals.
“The new empowerment opportunity strictly reserved for young business-minded northerners will run for 12 weeks after which successful beneficiaries will receive $5,000 each to build their business empire.”
The initiative is to produce direct job opportunity and Business Empire among young talented youths in the North,” stressed Elemelu.
Elumelu said that Nigeria has no business with poverty, if only concerned authorities deployed the needful policy strategy to explore deposited talents that abound in the country.
He therefore urged the Federal Government to create an enabling environment that will rapidly grow the economy, especially the need to abolish multiple taxation for small and micro businesses, and ease process of business registration, so as to further grow economic viability in the country.
He canvassed for government and other stakeholders to improve electricity supply, transportation, education and health to make life easy for people and business environment in the country
