AVIATION WATCH......Significance of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority NCAA Backing of the Universal eSIM to Ease Internet Access for Nigeria Travellers

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, is expanding its role beyond safety and compliance to also address passenger convenience in the digital age. With air travel becoming more connected, NCAA’s decision to back the universal eSIM initiative is a major step toward seamless travel experience for Nigerians.

A universal eSIM means travelers can activate mobile data instantly on arrival or even before departure without the stress of buying physical SIM cards. For Nigeria’s aviation sector, this removes one of the biggest friction points for both inbound and outbound passengers who need to stay online for bookings, immigration, and communication.

Capt. Chris Ona Najomo JP,  Director General, NCAA..said connectivity is now part of modern aviation infrastructure.

“If we want Nigerian airports and airlines to compete globally, we must make it easy for passengers to connect. The universal eSIM is about time, convenience and putting the traveler first. In aviation, we must keep moving forward.”

By backing the universal eSIM, NCAA is aligning Nigeria with global best practices where airports in Dubai, London, and Singapore already offer instant digital connectivity. This positions Nigeria as a hub that understands the needs of the 21st-century traveler.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, NCAA.. emphasized that the initiative is also about passenger rights and service delivery.

“When a passenger lands in Nigeria or is transiting, they should not struggle to get online. NCAA is backing this because access to information and communication is now a basic service, not a luxury.”

The significance goes beyond convenience. With a universal eSIM, airlines can push real-time flight updates, NCAA can send safety alerts, and tourism partners can engage visitors immediately. It creates a digital bridge between government, airlines, and travelers.

This move also supports Nigeria’s aviation growth agenda. Easier connectivity encourages business travel, tourism, and diaspora visits because people know they will stay connected from the moment they touch down. It reduces delays and improves the overall airport experience

As NCAA continues to regulate and guide the sector, its backing of the universal eSIM shows a forward-thinking approach. Safety remains the foundation, but passenger experience is the future. With leaders like Capt. Chris Najomo JP and Michael Achimugu driving the vision, NCAA is proving that aviation in Nigeria is banking on innovation to keep the industry moving forward.
